The A.M. Routine
The Cleanser. You probably heard that some people suggest using a cleanser in the morning, while others don’t. The answer is, there is not one solution that fits all. In general, if you have normal or dry skin a quick water wash will be the best option for you (find out your skin type here). If, on the other hand, you have oily skin or suffer from breakouts a gentle cleanser in the a.m. is the right thing for you. It’s important not to overdo it, since too much cleanser can irritate your skin. You can find a list of suitable cleansers for your skin type here.
The toner. While many women use a toner in thier daily skin routine, only few know what it is actually for. A toner is usually a water based liquid with several active ingreidients that hydrate and prepare your skin for the products you are going to apply to your skin in the next steps. In other words, it makes your skin more amenable. You can read more about the function of a toner here. The serum is one of the most important parts of your skin care routine. It is usually an oil based liquid with a high concentration of active ingredients. Some people, especially those who follow a Korean skin care routine, prefer to apply an essance before applying a serum. However, serum and essence are essentially very similar products with similar functions and using too many protucts at the same time might irritate your skin. Your eye and your neck are especially prone to signs of aging as the skin layers in those areas are quite thin. That’s why it is important to add an extra step in your daily skin care routine to take special care of those parts by using a dedicated eye cream. Moisturizer & SPF
Next to a cleanser, the moisturizer is the most used skin care product across all age gorups. A moisturizer prevents your skin from drying out and looking dull. During the day we recommend a light weight moisturizer that doesn’t make your skin look oily. Luckily people become more and more aware that their skin needs to be protected from the sun, as sun is one of the biggest factors in aging skin and can also lead to skin cancer. To prevent sun damage, we recommend a facial moisturizers with an SPF of at least 15+, even if it is raining outside. You can find a recommended list of suitable moisturisers with SPF here. Last but not least, skincare doesn’t stop on the outside. Taking care of your skin from the inside is equally important. From our mid- to late 20ies our body starts to produce less collagen. The P.M. Routine
While the cleanser in the morning for most skin types is optional, you should defenitely include it in your P.M. routine. During the day your skin is exposed to pollution, dirt, dust and many other irritating factors. Furthermore, if you are wearing make up it is essential to remove it in the evening. Therefore, we recommend using an oil based facial cleanser in the evening (see an overview over the best oil based facial cleansers here) followed by a water based cleanser (optional). After you removed all dirt particles from your skin and applied the toner, it is time for the facial serum containing a high conentration of bioactive ingredients. Like in the morning applying a an eye cream is essential to your daily P.M. skin routine. Taking care of the skin around the eyes is especially important as the skin layers are very thin and you will see the first signs of aging in this area before anywhere else. The moisturizer in the evening is an essential part of your daily skin care routine. Since you don’t have to go out anymore and get ready for bed it is recommended to use a heavier moisturizer in the evening, than in the morning. But careful, if the the moisturizer is too heavy it might cause outbreakes. So first check what kind of skin type you have.
